Postpartum Support International develops and launches first perinatal mental health certification exam with Pearson VUE

MINNEAPOLIS, MN, July 9, 2018 – Postpartum Support International (PSI) has partnered with Pearson VUE, the global leader in computer-based testing (CBT), to develop and launch the first certification exam in the field of perinatal mental health.

Pearson VUE’s team of PhD-level measurement scientists, also known as psychometricians, worked with subject matter experts from PSI to transform its training program content into a valid, fair and reliable certification exam.

Candidates can sit for the Perinatal Mental Health Certification exam at Pearson VUE’s network of more than 5,000 local test centers in 180 countries around the world starting in August. Candidates will benefit from on-demand testing, scheduling their exam for a time and date of their choice.

“This is the first certification exam of its kind and through our partnership with Postpartum Support International, more than 8,000 professionals who have completed the training program are now eligible to gain recognition for the positive impact they have on those suffering from postpartum mental health issues,” said Bob Whelan, president of Pearson Assessments.

“We are very passionate about the need for competent and qualified professionals to treat mothers and fathers, suffering from pregnancy and postpartum depression and other perinatal mood disorders,” said Wendy Davis, Executive Director of PSI. “This certification program has been developed in partnership with Pearson VUE’s experts to provide a gold standard certification for people doing this vital and life-changing work.”

About Postpartum Support International
Postpartum Support International was founded in 1987 by Jane Honikman in Santa Barbara, California. The purpose of the organization is to increase awareness among public and professional communities about the emotional changes that women experience during pregnancy and postpartum. Approximately 15 percent of all women will experience postpartum depression following the birth of a child. Up to 10 percent will experience depression or anxiety during pregnancy. When the mental health of the mother is compromised, it affects the entire family. PSI headquarters is located in Portland Oregon and has members all over the world, including volunteer coordinators in every one of the United States and in more than 36 other countries. PSI disseminates information and resources through its volunteer coordinators, website and annual conference. Its goal is to provide current information, resources, education, and to advocate for further research and legislation to support perinatal mental health.
